Top 5 Wednesday: Characters I Wouldn’t Want to Trade Places With

Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group created by gingerreadslainey. This week’s topic is Characters You Wouldn’t Want to Trade Places. A lot of book characters have crappy lives. For example: having no family, saving the world at 17 or living in a world with evil dictators. There’s a surprisingly high amount of characters who’d I never want to trade places with so here’s my top 5!

209572761.) Thomas from The Maze Runner series by James Dashner

I would be terrified if I had to swap places with Thomas! The maze in this series is terrifying, not to mention all the events later in the series. I would not be able to cope mentally or physically with most of the events in this series. Plus, Thomas lost the majority of his memories at the beginning of this series which is something I wouldn’t handle very well.

181669362.) Ava Lavender from The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

Although I enjoyed this book massively, I wouldn’t want to swap places with Ava Lavender. The Lavender family is followed by bad luck and haunted by tragedy. These things contribute to a lot of sadness occurring in Ava’s life. A part of me would love to have wings but I’m not so sure how I’d cope having them in normal, everyday life.

hungergamescover3.) Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins

I don’t think anyone would want to trade places with Katniss Everdeen or any other character in this series for that matter! Panem is a horrible country and even though I can’t fully comprehend how devastating it would be take part in the Hunger Games, I know it would be life changing in all the wrong ways. And as someone who likes to spend most of my days curled up inside with a good book, I don’t think I’d survive for very long if I had take part in the Hunger Games myself.

135193974.) Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas

I’m sure there are better ways of becoming a top-class assassin without swapping places with Celaena. She’s an amazingly talented and bad-ass character but she’s experienced so much hardship and misfortune at such a young age. I would not be cut out for persevering through all the struggles she’s had to.

shadow-and-bone_hi-res-677x10245.) Alina Starkov from The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

Similarly to Celaena, Alina struggled through so much pain and sacrificed so much over the course of this series. I love the world she lives in but there’s so much danger surrounding it. I’d never want to trade places with her to be there myself.

I think the overall message of this post is that I would not survive in a fictional world. Which book characters would you never trade places with?

  1. I think the question depends on whether I am just experiencing the same circumstances the characters are (ex. being thrown in the Hunger Games) or whether I am actually the character and have their abilities. Personally, I would probably last about 15 min in the Hunger Games. While I don’t think the experience would actually be enjoyable if I were Katniss, I think experiencing the games AS Katniss rather than as myself would probably work out better for me. 😉
