Top 5 Wednesday: Books That Took You Ages to Finish

Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group created by gingerreadslainey. This week’s topic is books that took you you the longest time to finish. I’m normally a pretty slow reader so a lot of books take me longer to finish then a lot of other bookworms. I also tend to get into reading slumps easily so there are a few books that have taken me ages to finish.

If you know anything about me, then you will know I love the Mortal Instruments series. Even though it’s one of my  favourite series now, it almost wasn’t. It took me a ridiculously long time to get through City of Ashes, the second book in this series, but it wasn’t because it was bad. I was in a terrible reading slump when I first read this novel and it took me about a year to finish it. It sat on my bedside table and I barely picked it up. But, I’m so glad I did because I got through the later books a lot quicker and fell in love with the world and characters.

to-kill-a-mockingbird-cover-1-186x3002.) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I read this book because I’ve been trying (and failing) to read more classics. And it took me over a month to finish this. This was mainly because the writing style took me ages to get into and the plot wasn’t really what I expected. There was a larger focus on Finch’s children than I thought there would be which threw me off a bit. I did end up enjoying this book a lot more by the second half of it but I think this is story I will need to read again to fully appreciate.

I just finished this book a couple of days ago and I started it at the beginning of September! So, it’s taken me about a month to complete it. This book also took me a while to get into but I did end up enjoying it a lot once I got my head around all the different characters. I was in a bit of a slump for a couple of weeks whilst reading this so I didn’t feel like reading anything and that’s why it took me ages to finish.

insurgent4.) Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I read Insurgent ages ago and I can’t remember how long it took me to finish it but I know it took me some time. I really loved the first book in this series, Divergent, but this book wasn’t as enjoyable. I didn’t like the direction that the plot was going and the characters started to bore me. As a result, it took me a long time to finish this and I have no plans to pick up the final book anytime soon.

cover-gone5.) Gone by Michael Grant

This book really wasn’t my thing. It started out really good and I was intrigued at first. But then the plot grew complicated and confusing. There was so much going on and I kind of lost interest. This book is quite long and in the end, I speed read the last 100 pages but even doing that took me longer than it should’ve done.

  1. A Long Way Down – Nick Hornby
It is the first and at the moment last, Nick Hornby book I have read. I really enjoyed the concept of the book, it just took me a while to get into the authors style of writing.

I agree with your thoughts on Insurgence. I really enjoyed Divergent. I did see the series through but really wish I hadn’t.

    1. I’ve never heard of that book before but I also struggle with some authors’ writing styles and it kind of puts me off reading their books.
I’ve not heard many good things about the end of the Divergent series so I’m not really interested in finishing it off.
